Album: Internal Exile by Fish (1991)
Genre: Rock | Style: Rock/Pop | Mood: Gritty
Format: Album

Description: Internal Exile ("A Collection of a Boy's Own Stories") was Fish's second solo album after leaving Marillion in 1988. The album, released 28 October 1991, was inspired by the singer's past, his own personal problems and his troubled experiences with his previous record label EMI.

The album's music reflects Fish's indulgence in the vast regions of music that he wanted to explore as a solo artist; most notably Celtic music and folk styles. The album also has many concert staples such as "Credo", "Tongues" and "Internal Exile" featuring on a number of Fish's official bootleg recordings.

As on Vigil, Fish deals with themes important to him. The song "Internal Exile" speaks of his strong national pride and his desire for independence for Scotland. "Credo" is another song dealing with social problems and globalisation, echoing "State of Mind", his first solo single.

The album was produced by Chris Kimsey, and dedicated to Fish's daughter Tara.

A remastered version was released by Roadrunner Records on 26 October 1998.

Artist Background: Derek William Dick, better known as Fish, is a Scottish singer, lyricist and occasional actor, best known as the former lead singer of the neo-progressive rock band Marillion. "Fellini Days" showcases a rich tapestry of live recordings and remixes, blending Fish's theatrical rock sensibilities with a dynamic range of sonic textures. The album features vibrant instrumentation, with electric guitars and keyboards weaving intricate melodies, while the live tracks capture the raw energy of performance, characterized by fluctuating tempos and emotive vocal delivery. The remixes, including "Dancing in Fog" and "Obligatory Ballad," introduce layered electronic elements, enhancing the atmospheric depth and providing a contemporary twist to the originals. The acoustic version of "Our Smile" offers a moment of introspection, contrasting the more energetic live pieces. Overall, the production balances polished clarity with a visceral live feel, making it a distinctive entry in Fish's discography.

Album: Suits by Fish (1994)
Genre: Rock | Style: Rock/Pop | Mood: Gritty
Format: Album

Description: Suits (1994) is the fourth solo album by former Marillion singer Fish, and his third studio album with original material (discounting 1993's cover project Songs from the Mirror). It is the first album to be released on Fish's new own label, the Dick Bros Record Company, which he set up after being dropped by Polydor. The album continues the cooperation with producer James Cassidy who had already produced Songs from the Mirror. Cassidy also contributed keyboards recordings and co-wrote five out of ten songs on the original version of this album. Together with keyboardist Foster Paterson, who had been part of the tour line-up since 1992 and co-wrote three tracks, Cassidy takes the role previously held by Mickey Simmonds. Further songwriting credits go to guitarist Robin Boult and bassist David Paton. The album took Fish the longest time yet to make, several songs on it had already premiered live in summer of 1992.

Album: Songs From the Mirror by Fish (1993)
Genre: Rock | Style: Rock/Pop | Mood: Gritty
Format: Album

Description: Songs from the Mirror was the third studio album that Fish released and it was the second of his two albums to fulfill his contract for Polydor. Fish needed more time to write a new album and he decided that to complete his current contract he would release an album of cover versions, an idea first conceived when he was with Marillion. The band was the same as the previous album except that Foster "Foss" Paterson replaced Mickey Simmonds as he had done on the tour. The songs chosen were personal favorites of Fish and are not all prog rock tracks as may have been thought from listening to his music. Of the tracks on the album, a number are fairly faithful to the originals; "Question" (Moody Blues), "Boston Tea Party" (Sensational Alex Harvey Band), and "Jeepster" (T. Rex). Fish did tend to adapt the slower songs on the album (e.g. Pink Floyd's "Fearless" and Sandy Denny's "Solo") to his own vocal style and his added depth to the music. Given that Marillion, in particular, were likened to Genesis, a very interesting choice of track on the album was "I Know What I Like" that had appeared on the album Selling England by the Pound. Fish's version was more upbeat although the chorus was fairly faithful to the original, especially with respect to him mirroring Peter Gabriel's vocal style. The album was first released in 1993 and was remastered on CD in 1998 when the tracks "Time and a Word" (Yes) and "The Seeker" (The Who) replaced "Jeepster."

Album: Sunsets on Empire by Fish (1997)
Genre: Rock | Style: Rock/Pop | Mood: Gritty
Format: Album

Description: Sunsets on Empire is a studio album by Fish, the fourth with original material since he left Marillion in 1988. It was mostly written together with Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree, who co-composed six of ten tracks on the original version (plus one bonus track on the Japanese and remastered edition) and also produced the album. Tim Bowness, Wilson's partner in No-Man, has additional writing credits on one track. Two permanent members of Fish's line-up, keyboardist Foster Paterson and guitarist Robin Boult co-wrote one and two tracks, respectively.
Unfortunately, the album and tour were flops and lost Fish hundreds of pounds, which meant he had to fold his Dick Brothers label. Roadrunner and Chocolate Frog/Snapper would subsequently reissue the album.
