Descent

On their 12th album, New York death metal veterans Immolation chart humankind’s fall under a shroud of personal tragedy. <i>Descent</i> was recorded just as vocalist/bassist Ross Dolan and guitarist Bob Vigna moved Dolan’s elderly mother into a senior community after a series of falls. She passed not long after the record was finished, and her decline greatly impacted Dolan’s mental state. As such, Vigna took the reins on <i>Descent</i>, crafting brutal, intricate songs detailing how humanity’s lust for money and power leads to a cycle of failure. Meanwhile, the menacing “God’s Last Breath” and frenzied “Adversary” rail against the organised religions that help fuel the chaos of our reality.
