Overgrown

The sultry, future-facing second album from the electronic wunderkind builds on the quiet singularity of his debut. And how. Constantly propelling you into a higher, denser place of quietude, this is scintillating music that frequently achieves almost primal crescendos. "Life Round Here" builds around its pacey syncopated beat and ‘80s bleepiness and "Take a Fall for Me" is a bleakly bittersweet anti-romance that pitches Blake's desperate recants against RZA's plaintive rhymes. But it's "Retrograde"—instantly recognisable from first hum and a ballad of howling desperatation—that perfectly distils his appeal.
