The long-running band’s 24th studio album contemplates the great beyond. Based on a concept conceived by Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan, SPLAT! envisions the end of humanity not as an apocalypse but as our collective transition into a life beyond physical existence. Opener “Arrogant Boy” addresses the stereotypical ignorant human with a keyboard-heavy style reminiscent of Purple’s early-’70s salad days. “Diablo” rides a retro groove and features guitar moves from recent recruit Simon McBride that might just turn the head of ex-Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Prog adventure “Guilt Trippin’” imagines God and Charles Darwin having a quiet drink in the pub, wondering where the human experiment went wrong. All the while, classic Purple personnel Gillan, drummer Ian Paice and bassist Roger Glover, plus all-star keyboardist Don Airey—all aged 78 to 80—revel in the unlikely reality of the band’s 24th studio album.
