<b>The long-running band’s 24th studio album contemplates the great beyond.</b> Based on a concept conceived by Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan, <i>SPLAT!</i> envisions the end of humanity not as an apocalypse but as our collective transition into a life beyond physical existence. Opener <b>“Arrogant Boy”</b> addresses the stereotypical ignorant human with a keyboard-heavy style reminiscent of Purple’s early-’70s salad days. <b>“Diablo”</b> rides a retro groove and features guitar moves from recent recruit Simon McBride that might just turn the head of ex-Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Prog adventure <b>“Guilt Trippin’”</b> imagines God and Charles Darwin having a quiet drink in the pub, wondering where the human experiment went wrong. All the while, classic Purple personnel Gillan, drummer Ian Paice and bassist Roger Glover, plus all-star keyboardist Don Airey—all aged 78 to 80—revel in the unlikely reality of the band’s 24th studio album.
