Album: empathogen by WILLOW (2024)
Genre: jazz
Record Label: Three Six Zero Recordings
Format: CD

Description: “I really feel like I just hit a specific intersection between what I've always wanted to say, and my skill catching up with what I've always wanted to say,” WILLOW tells Apple Music about empathogen. "That's exactly how I feel about this whole album.” Over the course of her nearly decade-and-a-half-long music career, she’s moved through various genre spaces freely. Yet those who enjoyed her recent full-length forays into artfully angsty post-punk will likely find the vibe shift here more drastic than any jagged guitar rock riff. Conveniently albeit loosely categorised as jazz, these dozen tunes showcase yet another side of her maturing craft.

Despite the inherent softness of acoustic compositions like “ancient girl”, WILLOW’s strengths burst through each and every time. Informed to some extent by the presence of guests like Jon Batiste and St. Vincent, two vanguard artists who consistently push against convention, empathogen gives her ample space to explore and expand. Her lyrics often feel simultaneously confessional and poetic, her voice thick with emotional resonance on “down” and “symptom of life”. Traces of 2022’s sonically tougher <COPINGMECHANISM> linger via the frenetic pop-rock fusions of “between i and she” and “false self”. Still, it’s clear that she’s levelled up on all fronts, perhaps most poignantly on “b i g f e e l i n g s”, a finale as grand as any in her discography. “It's trying to bring you in, even though it is extremely complicated,” she says. “Obviously it's a lot to take in when you listen to it for the first time, but there are moments that you really get into that rhythm.”

Description: That Willow Smith would be a force of genre-twisting, experimental pop should surprise no one. The young star has been defying expectations since she was a kid (her debut single "Whip My Hair" was released when she was nine years old), operating with an artistic eye and an individualistic spirit. Here, the 18-year-old singer, already on her third studio album, stretches surprising sounds and textures—chilling spiritual chanting (“Then [Interlude]”) and breathy R&B-blues (“Time Machine")—into mysterious and unusual forms. The moods are extreme: “PrettyGirlz” begins as an intimate, controlled croon before bursting into a wall of dense electric guitar, and “Samo Is Now” layers dizzying, criss-crossing vocals over shy drums. Smith isn’t a powerhouse singer, but she uses her voice well, weaving her fluttery falsetto into tracks that are already vibrating with activity. And she may well be on her way to powerhouse status: On songs like “Overthinking IT”, a devastatingly soulful number that rings of Kadhja Bonet, she reveals an expansive range and vocal dexterity that suggest she’s just warming up.

Album: <COPINGMECHANISM> by WILLOW (2022)
Genre: alternative rock
Record Label: MSFTSMusic
Format: CD

Description: WILLOW made her return to music in 2021 with her infectious pop-punk- and indie-rock-style fourth album, lately I feel EVERYTHING, a departure from the neo-soul and alt-R&B of her previous albums. For her fifth album (co-produced by singer-songwriter and guitarist Chris Greatti), the emo-punk star deals with heartbreak the best way she knows how: through catchy hooks rife with angst against crashing cymbals and sharp bass riffs, leaning into a grittier sound than its predecessor.

The album opener “maybe it’s my fault” chronicles the rise and fall of a relationship, with WILLOW coming to terms with the possibility that her actions may have caused its downfall. The song begins with WILLOW reminiscing on the whirlwind early days over angelic background vocals, steadily intensifying to when the first fight happens. “I don’t know/How I can forgive you/It’s all in my mind, it’s all in my mind/I try to rewind and all of the while, I’m hurtin’ inside/It’s your fault/Maybe it’s my fault,” she sings. The album serves as a cathartic purging of emotions across each of its 11 tracks. Whether it’s about feeling the physical and mental isolation of moving through the world (“curious/furious”, “WHY?”) or reflecting on a fractured relationship (“Split”, “Coping Mechanism”), WILLOW showcases her vulnerability with ease.

Genre: pop
Record Label: Roc Nation
Format: Digital Media

Description: A decade after Willow Smith taught us how to whip our hair back and forth, the genre-bending artist is still just getting started. Her sound has evolved from bubblegum pop hits to alt-R&B to, now, a full pop-punk album. However, her transition into the genre shouldn’t be surprising, since rock runs in her blood: Her first introduction to the medium was from being on the road with her mother Jada Pinkett Smith’s nu-metal band Wicked Wisdom in the early 2000s. Then the multi-hyphenate talent experimented with rock-adjacent sounds on tracks like “Human Leech” from her 2017 album The 1st, and more prominently on her 2020 album THE ANXIETY. All of these moments set the groundwork for the singer’s fifth studio album.
Created and recorded during quarantine, lately I feel EVERYTHING is an homage to the touchstones of 2000s pop-punk, such as blink-182, Avril Lavigne and Fefe Dobson. The opening track “t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l” is an upbeat, energetic, angst-ridden anthem with a mix of clean and distorted guitars backed by booming drums courtesy of blink-182’s drummer Travis Barker, who assists on two other tracks on the album. For every angsty pop-punk like “Gaslight” and “G R O W”—which features none other than Lavigne herself—there’s a heavier metal-influenced track like “Lipstick”, “don’t SAVE ME” or “Come Home”, showing WILLOW’s growth not only as a singer but as a songwriter.
