When T-Pain sang the hook on DJ Khaled’s “All I Do Is Win”, he was just calling his 2019 shot. The “rappa-ternt-sanga” won the reality show The Masked Singer dressed up as a monster who brought celebrity panelist Nicole Scherzinger to tears. On episode 8, he knew this was a chance at redemption after too many dormant years threatened to disrupt his career. “I learned the hard way that it just takes one slip to make you lose your place in the world,” T-Pain, as the Monster, said. “It's crazy that losing my identity has brought me the comeback I've wanted for a decade.” 
He was cyclops-head-and-shoulders above his competitors Donny Osmond (the peacock) and Gladys Knight (the bee), leading many of his friends to burn up his phone airing their suspicions. “Everybody that got my phone number hit me, ‘How do they not know that's you?’,” T-Pain told Beats 1’s Ebro Darden. “When they pitched me the show, I was like, ‘I'm going to be off the first episode. There's no way that nobody is not going to know that's me.’ The judges are great people—I don't think they've ever heard me sing before.” 
That’s highly unlikely given T-Pain’s impressive track record: “I’m N Luv (Wit a Stripper)”, “Bartender”, “Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin’)” and too many hooks to count. The reality show, combined with his sixth studio album 1UP, serves as a reminder of what made T-Pain one of rap and R&B's most reliable hitmakers in the late 2000s. “RIP to the Parking Lot” with Boosie Badazz and “Getcha Roll On” with Tory Lanez show his knowledge of club dynamics. Although he won The Masked Singer without using pitch correction software, he employs it tastefully here on the ballads “Be Your X” and “Keep This from Me.” And T-Pain confirmed to Ebro that “It’s My Dog Birthday” is a tribute to his canine pals, not human ones (nose boops to his French bulldogs Rallo and Roger). “I also have a Persian cat named Stewie. All my pets are named after the kids on Seth MacFarlane shows.” 
1UP also takes aim at the disrespect he’s endured after seeing subsequent rappers-turned-singers get rich off his robotic vocal style. It boils over on “Goat Talk”, his collaboration with Lil Wayne. “I called Wayne. ‘You got to talk your s--t. I don't think you have enough disrespect for records out there, and I want you to disrespect everybody,’” he told Ebro. “And then Wayne was like, ‘All right, I got that. But how do they not know that you’re on The Masked Singer?’ I was like, ‘Wayne, that's not what we're talking about today.’”

Description: Hated on for his over-the-top appearance, his constant use of the electronic Auto-Tune voice filter, plus guest shots on maybe 30-percent of the R&B or hip-hop singles released during the years 2007/2008, T-Pain is the full package in a sidekick's disguise. Like a garish version of his label boss Akon, he's a singer/songwriter/producer who doesn't evolve much over this avalanche of releases and guest shots, but Thr33 Ringz proves he's much more aware of his limitations. First, there's the long guest list here, featuring high-power names like Lil Wayne, T.I., Kanye West, and Akon himself. Then, there's the album's concept, which finds a series of perfectly polished and unsurprising numbers held together by a circus theme, allowing T-Pain to exploit his "Ringleader Man" persona; hyping every act and stunt while pacing the parade for maximum impact. Three tracks in and Ludacris appears on the good-timing "Chopped N Skrewed" where the Southern style of remixing is mimicked with Luda's excellent sense of humor. The futuristic highlight "Blowing Up" finds Ciara seducing T-Pain with quirky references to techno and electronica plus a rock-solid hook. Shame that the ringleader's weird way of rhyming "mansion" and "Wisconsin" is the high point of "Can't Believe It" since guest star Lil Wayne seems on autopilot. Wait 'til the break-up song "Therapy" and you'll get two Wayne-style lines to choose from with T-Pain offering "1234/Get the hell up out my door/5678/I don't need your sex I'll masturbate" while guest Kanye West gives up "You too much pressure doll/You gonna raise my cholesterol." There's no big finish and Akon's dream of turning "every bullet to a Hershey's Kiss" so we can "eat away our fears" is just one example of why "Change" is awful, but this is an otherwise entertaining example of the gimmick-filled R&B/hip-hop album done right.

Befitting its title, 2016’s The Getaway marks the biggest departure for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in more than a decade. After a lengthy hitmaking streak with collaborator Rick Rubin, the group began looking for a new creative approach, which led them to producer Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton. He insisted the band members throw out the majority of their pre-written music and instead construct their songs in the studio. With his layered, lustrous production—and five co-songwriting credits—Burton mutated the Peppers into a completely different animal.

The 13 tracks that make up The Getaway have a cosmopolitan, genre-crossing gleam. The Peppers channel trip-hop on the radio hit “Dark Necessities”, while “We Turn Red” finds drummer Chad Smith sounding like the human version of a Led Zeppelin break. “Go Robot”, meanwhile, is shiny soft-funk inspired by Prince’s New Wave era, polished up to resemble the sheen of a Daft Punk track. And throughout The Getaway, string arrangements from Daniele Luppi trade the dry and intimate feel of the Rubin Peppers albums for something more muted and more atmospheric.

Still, even though Burton pushed the band into new territories on The Getaway, the Peppers clearly hadn’t lost their knack for poignant heartbreakers. “The Hunter” uses a Portishead lilt while Kiedis—a new father—reflects on his relationship with his own dad: “Even though you raised me I will never be your father... Even though you’re crazy you will never be a bother.” “Sick Love” is a yacht-glam crooner with similar chords as “Bennie and the Jets” (the band even invited Elton John to guest on piano). And as the band pulsates with loping grooves, Kiedis contemplates the end of a two-year relationship on “Goodbye Angels” and “Dreams of a Samurai”.

There’d be more breakups along the way: After The Getaway and its subsequent tour, guitar whiz Josh Klinghoffer was replaced by the Peppers’ on-and-off guitarist John Frusciante, and the band would reunite with Rick Rubin on 2022’s back-to-back releases Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen. But The Getaway remains an electric detour full of luminous productions and naked emotion, proving there’s still new and exciting ways to rewire the most successful funk-rock franchise of all time.

"rEVOLVEr" showcases T-Pain's signature blend of Auto-Tuned vocals and urban beats, creating a confrontational sonic landscape. The production is characterized by heavy bass lines and crisp snares, driving the energy of tracks like "Bang Bang Pow Pow" and "5 O'Clock."
