Guided by three friends from Brooklyn and the Bronx, It’s About Time kicked off a new R&B era by encouraging young, black female artists to be themselves. “Blak Pudd’n” and “Downtown” address sex from a lady’s perspective, while SWV take control of a hip-hop beat on “Anything”. With a hook you simply can’t get out of your head, “Weak” is a ’90s R&B standard, but it’s “That’s What I Need” and “You’re Always On My Mind”—a pair of lush, hypnotic ballads—that epitomise the trio’s mature-beyond-their-years vibe.

"Still" by SWV (2016) offers a smooth, contemporary R&B experience with a nostalgic nod to the '90s sound that defined the group. The production is polished, featuring lush harmonies and a blend of modern beats with classic soul elements. Tracks like "Still" and "Ain't No Man" highlight the group's signature vocal prowess, layered over mid-tempo grooves and warm, rich instrumentation. The album balances upbeat tracks like "MCE (Man Crush Everyday)" with more intimate, slow-burning ballads such as "When Love Didn't Hurt." The textures are silky and inviting, with a focus on emotive delivery and melodic hooks. Overall, "Still" maintains a cohesive sound that feels both fresh and familiar, appealing to long-time fans and new listeners alike.

When SWV resurfaced in 2005 after an eight-year hiatus, contemporary R&B was markedly different than it had been in their ballad-centric ’90s heyday. But as this second post-comeback effort illustrates, they’ve adapted to the times, shaking up new jack harmonies with sleek production, injections of funk and smart samples. Clever updates run throughout: “MCE (Man Crush Everyday)” frames a 2010s hashtag in crystalline late-’90s synths; a verse on the snappy “Love Song” interpolates Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab”. Still stands as emphatic punctuation: These sisters with voices are back to stay.

Coming out of New York City, SWV (a.k.a. Coko, Taj, and LeLee) were discovered by Teddy Riley, and the trio hit the scene in 1992 with the triple-platinum debut album It's About Time. SWV had some huge singles (including "Weak," "I'm So into You," and the MJ-sampling "Right Here/Human Nature"), leading to three more albums and several more chart-topping hits. I Missed Us is their first album since 1997's somewhat forgettable A Special Christmas, and it shows that the ladies haven't lost a step since their glory days. From the jump-off single "Co-Sign" to the throwback party jam "Do Ya" (featuring Brianna Perry) and the contemplative title track, this is definitely a welcome and triumphant return for Sisters with Voices. If you were a fan back in the day, you'll dig it for sure. Yet even if you were too young the first time around, this is as good or better than most of today's modern R&B. Also check out "Time to Go," "Everything I Love," and "Love Unconditionally."
