Album: Sound of Water by Saint Etienne (2000)
Genre: Alternative Rock | Style: Rock/Pop
Record Label: Heavenly
Format: Album

Description: Sound of Water (2000) is an album by Saint Etienne. At the time of release, this album split the band's fanbase between those who preferred the more commercial song-based sound of Good Humor and singles like "You're in a Bad Way" and "He's on the Phone" from those who appreciated the band's new direction, which was more experimental in nature. Sound of Water was developed as Saint Etienne's ambient and trip-hop statement.

The album's lead single was the sprawling, multi-movement "How We Used to Live," which was not edited down from its 9 minute running length for single release.

Their previous US release Places to Visit was clearly the beginning of this new direction. Many of the artists with whom they collaborated on that EP are present on Sound of Water.

During the group's tenure with Sub Pop (1998-2005), Saint Etienne released many albums. Places to Visit preceded Sound of Water. In turn, the label released Interlude a year afterwards. Interlude is an album of mostly b-sides from the Sound of Water singles, as well as a couple from the Good Humor era.

The album is one of the few releases on which the band did not collaborate with Ian Catt in some way. The album was co-produced by Gerard Johnson and had arrangements by To Rococo Rot and Sean O'Hagan. It was recorded at To Rococo Rot's studio, Amber Sound, in Berlin, Germany. The band have described the recording sessions as 'working in an airless, windowless oven'. The album and singles artwork were all designed by Julian Opie an artist famed for his portraits of the band Blur.

Artist Background: Cola Boy was a duo, consisting of Janey Lee Grace and Andrew Midgley. Andrew had worked with Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs (from Saint Etienne) on studio material in their pre-St Etienne days in the late 1980s. Janey had been a backing singer for numerous pop acts, including Wham and Pasty Kensit's Eighth Wonder, and was a radio broadcaster on LBC. Emerged in the 1990s era. Associated with Dance movement.

Music Scene: Emerged in the 1990s era. Associated with Dance movement.

Album: The Misadventures of Saint Etienne by Saint Etienne (1999)
Genre: Alternative Rock | Style: Rock/Pop
Record Label: Heavenly
Format: Album

Description: mostly instrumental album released only in Japan, The Misadventures of St. Etienne is not quite a proper St. Etienne album. Instead, it's the soundtrack of a little-seen British indie film called The Misadventures of Margaret, starring Parker Posey and Brooke Shields. Fans of Sarah Cracknell's Lulu-style vocals should be warned that she sings on only seven of the 20 tracks, and that many of the remaining songs are simple piano instrumentals and themes. That said, the album's centerpiece song, "The Way I Fell for You," is a complete stunner, one of the band's best-ever tracks, and the ironically bouncy "It's All Gone Horribly Wrong" isn't far behind. Elsewhere, Bob Stanley's well-documented love for '60s French pop finally appears in their cover of Francoise Hardy's "Find Me a Boy." A few tracks sound a bit familiar, particularly "17th Century Sea," a kissing cousin of "The Sea" from the Continental compilation, but the overall mood (upbeat melancholy, perhaps?) makes up for weaknesses in individual tracks. Not an album to start with, but fans of St. Etienne's later work will find it essential.

"International" by Saint Etienne is a pop album that likely continues the band's tradition of blending nostalgic and contemporary sounds. Known for their lush production, the album probably features a mix of electronic and organic instrumentation, with shimmering synths and gentle acoustic elements. Tracks like "Glad" and "Sweet Melodies" suggest a bright, upbeat tempo, while titles such as "Fade" and "The Last Time" hint at more introspective moments. The production is expected to be polished, with a focus on creating a warm, enveloping soundscape. Album: London Conversations: The Best of Saint Etienne by Saint Etienne (2009)
Genre: Alternative Rock | Style: Rock/Pop
Record Label: Heavenly
Format: Compilation

Description: London Conversations: The Best of Saint Etienne is a compilation album by Saint Etienne. It was released as a deluxe 2CD/DVD set (packaged in a hardback book), standard 2CD set and on double 12" vinyl. It features the 2008 Xenomania Mix of "Burnt Out Car", the Richard X mix of "This Is Tomorrow" and "Method Of Modern Love". The compilation features a selection of their regular A-sides on the first disc, while disc two includes various further A-sides, B-sides, non-singles and album tracks. Originally due for release in November 2008 following the re-release of "Burnt Out Car," the set was delayed several times as a result of manufacturing issues as well as the introductory single's low chart position. In addition, a planned single-disc edition (featuring solely the first disc of the set) was canceled. The set ultimately came out in February 2009 following the release of the newly recorded Richard X collaboration "Method Of Modern Love." Some early-run copies of the 2CD edition are available, though, and are missing "Method Of Modern Love."

In its week of release the compilation charted at #79 in the UK, missing out on the Top 75 in part due to a surge in older albums following the Brit Awards.

Album: Good Humor by Saint Etienne (1998)
Genre: Alternative Rock | Style: Rock/Pop
Record Label: Heavenly
Format: Album

Description: Good Humor is the fourth studio album by English electronic music band Saint Etienne, released in 1998. The American spelling "humor" is used in the title as the band were, according to Sarah Cracknell, "fed up with the 'quintessentially English' tag, so there was a bit of a backlash against that."

The album was a departure for the group, who had been associated with the indie dance genre. Tiger Bay, their previous album, had added many acoustic and orchestral elements but still belonged to the synthpop and dance genres, while Good Humor is more acoustic, having more in common musically with their 1993 hit single "You're in a Bad Way". Good Humor was demoed in the UK using synths and drum machines, but was recorded in Sweden under the guidance of Tore Johansson, who augmented their sound with a full band and a horn section.

Album: Foxbase Alpha by Saint Etienne (1991)
Genre: Alternative Rock | Style: Rock/Pop
Record Label: Heavenly
Format: Album

Description: Foxbase Alpha is the first album by British band Saint Etienne, released in 1991.

The album was recorded in a style which is close to the house music sound of the time, but songs like "Nothing Can Stop Us" and "Wilson" display the group's characteristic love of 1960s pop and several samples. Longer songs like "Stoned to Say the Least" and "Like the Swallow" are reminiscent of ambient house akin to The Orb. Like its follow-up So Tough, Foxbase Alpha's songs are bridged by samples from films or by short songs. At the time of recording, Sarah Cracknell was not fully part of group, and as a result she does not sing on "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", which is sung by Moira Lambert.

Foxbase Alpha was shortlisted for the inaugural Mercury Music Prize.

Album: Tiger Bay by Saint Etienne (1994)
Genre: Alternative Rock | Style: Rock/Pop
Record Label: Heavenly
Format: Album

Description: Tiger Bay is the third studio album by British band Saint Etienne. It was released June 28, 1994 by Heavenly Records. In an interview with Record Collector, band member Bob Stanley stated that the title is a reference to the 1959 film Tiger Bay.

The album is described by Bob Stanley as "an album of modern folk songs done in twentieth century styles like techno and dub". "Like a Motorway", for example, blends Kraftwerk-style techno with the melody from the nineteenth century folk song "Silver Dagger". Some of the songs, such as "Marble Lions" and "Former Lover" forsake electronics for classical folk instrumentation and orchestral arrangements. One, "Western Wind", is a traditional English folk song.
