Album: SOUR by Olivia Rodrigo (2021)
Genre: Pop | Style: Rock/Pop | Mood: Happy
Record Label: Interscope Geffen A&M
Format: Album

Description: Sour (stylized in all caps) is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo, released on May 21, 2021, via Geffen Records. Rodrigo stated that the album explores her perils and discoveries as a 17-year-old, with its title referring to the uncomfortable "sour" emotions youngsters experience but are often shamed for, such as anger, jealousy and heartache. The musical style of Sour was inspired by Rodrigo's favorite genres and singer-songwriters.

Written and produced by Rodrigo and Daniel Nigro alongside few other collaborators, Sour is primarily an alt pop record that juxtaposes upbeat alternative rock and pop-punk songs aside bedroom pop ballads, driven by guitars, piano and synths. Its subject matter deals with topics centered on adolescence, failed romance and heartache told from Rodrigo's various perspectives. Sour received universal acclaim from music critics, who regarded it a solid debut, and praised Rodrigo's musical versatility, honest lyricism, and Gen Z appeal.

Three singles preceded Sour's release: Rodrigo's debut single and the album's lead single, "Drivers License", achieved global success and acclaim, debuted atop the US Billboard Hot 100, and propelled Rodrigo to mainstream prominence. It was followed by "Deja Vu", which reached number 8 on the chart, making her the first artist in the Hot 100 history to debut their first two singles inside the top 10. "Good 4 U" was released a week before the album.

Olivia Rodrigo is an American singer-songwriter and actress who was best known for her lead acting roles in Disney Channel's comedy series Bizaardvark (2016-2019) and the 2019 Disney+ mockumentary series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. She recorded songs for the latter's soundtrack, including "All I Want", which received a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. In 2020, Rodrigo signed to Geffen Records in intention of releasing her debut EP in 2021. American songwriter and producer Dan Nigro was suggested by a friend to listen to Rodrigo's songs on the soundtrack. Nigro was "just completely blown away" and reached out to Rodrigo via Instagram, offering to work with her. The pair had a meeting to get to know one another, shortly after which the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the United States. They started collaborating after figuring ways to work safely in isolation. She released her debut single "Drivers License", produced by Nigro, on January 8, 2021, to unprecedented commercial and critical success. Billboard declared the single one of the most dominant number-one songs in Hot 100 history.

Rodrigo began teasing a follow-up single by archiving her past Instagram posts and posting cryptic teasers of it on her social media accounts in late March 2021; on March 29, she announced that it would be titled "Deja Vu", and set a release date of three days later, reassuring fans that the announcement was not an April Fools' Day joke. Rodrigo unveiled the song's artwork in the same post. Following her rise to prominence, Rodrigo stated that she will be releasing a studio album instead of an EP, after she felt unsatisfied with the scope of a shorter project when only a full-length album can be "truly reflective of what can do."

Album: GUTS by Olivia Rodrigo (2023)
Genre: Pop | Mood: Happy
Format: Album

Description: Guts (stylized in all caps) is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo, released on September 8, 2023, via Geffen Records. It was written and recorded with Rodrigo working closely alongside Dan Nigro, the producer and multi-instrumentalist of her debut album Sour (2021). Inspired by the period of time immediately following Sour's success, Rodrigo conceived Guts hoping to reflect the process of maturity she experienced toward the end of her teenage years.

A sonically diverse pop record with energetic songs and soft ballads, Guts experiments with more rock influences than its predecessor, utilizing a variety of guitar and drums sounds from older alternative and pop rock styles. The subject matter deals with Rodrigo's transition from adolescence to adulthood and its tribulations.

Met with widespread acclaim from music critics, Guts was praised for Rodrigo's lyrical wit, complexity, and topicality as well as the overall music aesthetic and energy. Reviews noted both humorous and emotionally fraught lyrics in the album, detailing Rodrigo's struggles with identity, romantic and professional disillusionment, unexpected stardom, and societal expectations as a young woman. Commercially, it topped the album charts in 12 countries, including the United States, Australia, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Three singles were released from the album. The lead single, "Vampire", became a number-one hit in the US and several other countries, followed by "Bad Idea Right?" and "Get Him Back!", which reached the top 10 internationally. To further support the album, Rodrigo will embark on the Guts World Tour in 2024.

Background
On May 21, 2021, Olivia Rodrigo released her debut studio album, Sour, to huge commercial success. Produced by Dan Nigro, it became the most-streamed album of 2021 and won Rodrigo three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist. She embarked on the Sour Tour, which consisted of 48 shows across North America and Europe, in spring 2022. In August 2021, Rodrigo surmised that her upcoming record would probably "be a lot happier" than her debut. Talking to Billboard in February 2022, she confirmed Nigro will return as producer and she had a title and "a few songs" ready. Rodrigo aimed to "get as much done as possible" before embarking on the Sour Tour. In late 2022, while revealing her Spotify Wrapped, she confirmed that new music was underway. On January 8, 2023, she posted a clip which featured a piano-driven track on her Instagram.

In early June 2023, Rodrigo's website was updated with a countdown that was set to end on June 30, a date she had also teased in late May. On June 13, Rodrigo officially announced the album's lead single "Vampire", slated for release on June 30, and revealed the single cover. On June 20, she revealed another Easter egg by leaving her fans a voicemail greeting, which turned out to be the first preview of "Vampire" and played a piano-driven instrumental. On June 26, 2023, her webstore revealed the official album title, Guts, and its release date. Following this, Rodrigo posted the artwork and officially announced the album on social media.

Writing and recording
In a statement, Rodrigo shared that the album is about "growing pains" and figuring out her identity at this point in her life. She stated "I feel like I grew 10 years between the ages of 18 and 20", and described it as a natural part of "growth", and hoped to reflect that with the record.

Rodrigo recorded Guts while experiencing "lots of confusion, mistakes, awkwardness & good old fashioned teen angst". Described by her as a "time capsule", the record contains "wrenching, cinematic" ballads and "playful and insouciant" songs, according to Vogue. Rodrigo abstained from songwriting for six months following Sour's release, so that she could "live a life in order to be able to write about it". Work on the album concluded about a week before "Vampire" was released. In an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Rodrigo revealed she had the title in mind since the time she was making Sour. It was influenced by the "interesting contexts" she noticed people use it in: "spill your guts, hate your guts".

Music
Guts features a sonically diverse range of tracks, from delicate ballads like "Lacy" to retro-inspired guitar-driven tunes such as "Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl". Rodrigo's collaboration with Nigro played a significant role in the album's development, providing constructive feedback and contributing to its overall sound. According to The A.V. Club, Guts offers a mix of nostalgic and contemporary music elements, helping in the album's appeal with a wide audience.

Rock music plays a larger role here than on Rodrigo's first album. She expands particularly on the aggressive songs and alternative rock sounds demonstrated briefly on Sour, with elements from emo, new wave, shoegaze, and rap rock used on different songs here. As Los Angeles Times lead critic Mikael Wood writes, Rodrigo and Nigro are shown "switching up guitar tones and drum sounds to give each track a distinct signature". Rolling Stone journalist Brian Hiatt and Vulture writer Craig Jenkins both regard Guts as a rock album and argue that such a strong direction into the genre is uncommon for a major pop artist like Rodrigo.

In another comparison to Sour, The A.V. Club identifies much older sources of inspiration behind Guts, particularly the grunge and pop-rock sounds of the 1990s and early 2000s. Along with grunge and new wave, Jenkins names power pop among the stylistic tactics behind the album's sentimental ballads and alternative rockers. Echoing this, Will Hodgkinson of The Times says that the album alternates "between heartfelt balladry and raucous indie rock". "Vampire", which begins as a hushed piano ballad, intensifies into a rock opera.

As Olivia Rodrigo set out to write her second album, she froze. “I couldn't sit at the piano without thinking about what other people were going to think about what I was playing,” she tells Apple Music. “I would sing anything and I'd just be like, ‘Oh, but will people say this and that, will people speculate about whatever?’”

Given the outsized reception to 2021’s SOUR—which rightly earned her three Grammys and three Apple Music Awards that year, including Top Album and Breakthrough Artist—and the chatter that followed its devastating, extremely viral first single, “drivers license”, you can understand her anxiety. She’d written much of that record in her bedroom, free of expectation, having never played a show. The week before it was finally released, the then-18-year-old singer-songwriter would get to perform for the first time, only to televised audiences in the millions, at the BRIT Awards in London and on SNL in New York. Some artists debut—Rodrigo arrived.

But looking past the hype and the hoo-ha and the pressures of a famously sold-out first tour (during a pandemic, no less), trying to write as anticipated a follow-up album as there’s been in a very long time, she had a realisation: “All I have to do is make music that I would like to hear on the radio, that I would add to my playlist,” she says. “That's my sole job as an artist making music; everything else is out of my control. Once I started really believing that, things became a lot easier.”

Written alongside trusted producer Dan Nigro, GUTS is both natural progression and highly confident next step. Boasting bigger and sleeker arrangements, the high-stakes piano ballads here feel high-stakes-ier (“vampire”), and the pop-punk even punkier (“all-american bitch”, which somehow splits the difference between Hole and Cat Stevens’ “Here Comes My Baby”). If SOUR was, in part, the sound of Rodrigo picking up the pieces post-heartbreak, GUTS finds her fully healed and wholly liberated—laughing at herself (“love is embarrassing”), playing chicken with disaster (the Go-Go’s-y “bad idea right?”), not so much seeking vengeance as delighting in it (“get him back!”). This is Anthem Country, joyride music, a set of smart and immediately satisfying pop songs informed by time spent onstage, figuring out what translates when you’re face-to-face with a crowd. “Something that can resonate on a recording maybe doesn't always resonate in a room full of people,” she says. “I think I wrote this album with the tour in mind.”

And yet there are still moments of real vulnerability, the sort of intimate and sharply rendered emotional terrain that made Rodrigo so relatable from the start. She’s straining to keep it together on “making the bed”, bereft of good answers on “logical”, in search of hope and herself on gargantuan closer “teenage dream”. Alone at a piano again, she tries to make sense of a betrayal on “the grudge”, gathering speed and altitude as she goes, each note heavier than the last, “drivers license”-style. But then she offers an admission that doesn’t come easy if you’re sweating a reaction: “It takes strength to forgive, but I don’t feel strong.” In hindsight, she says, this album is “about the confusion that comes with becoming a young adult and figuring out your place in this world and figuring out who you want to be. I think that that's probably an experience that everyone has had in their life before, just rising from that disillusionment.” Read on as Rodrigo takes us inside a few songs from GUTS.

“all-american bitch”
“It's one of my favourite songs I've ever written. I really love the lyrics of it and I think it expresses something that I've been trying to express since I was 15 years old—this repressed anger and feeling of confusion, or trying to be put into a box as a girl.”

“vampire”
“I wrote the song on the piano, super chill, in December of [2022]. And Dan and I finished writing it in January. I've just always been really obsessed with songs that are very dynamic. My favourite songs are high and low, and reel you in and spit you back out. And so we wanted to do a song where it just crescendoed the entire time and it reflects the pent-up anger that you have for a situation.”

“get him back!”
“Dan and I were at Electric Lady Studios in New York and we were writing all day. We wrote a song that I didn't like and I had a total breakdown. I was like, ‘God, I can't write songs. I'm so bad at this. I don't want to.’ Being really negative. Then we took a break and we came back and we wrote ‘get him back!’. Just goes to show you: Never give up.”

“teenage dream”
“Ironically, that's actually the first song we wrote for the record. The last line is a line that I really love and it ends the album on a question mark: ‘They all say that it gets better/It gets better the more you grow/They all say that it gets better/What if I don't?’ I like that it’s like an ending, but it's also a question mark and it's leaving it up in the air what this next chapter is going to be. It's still confused, but it feels like a final note to that confusion, a final question.”

If Olivia Rodrigo has a superpower, it’s that, at 18, she already understands that adolescence spares no one. The heartbreak, the humiliation, the vertiginous weight of every lonesome thought and outsized feeling—none of that really leaves us, and exploring it honestly almost always makes for good pop songs. “I grew up listening to country music,” the California-born singer-songwriter (also an experienced actor and current star of Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) tells Apple Music. “And I think it’s so impactful and emotional because of how specific it is, how it really paints pictures of scenarios. I feel like a song is so much more special when you can visualise and picture it, even smell and taste all of the stuff that the songwriter's going through.”
To listen to Rodrigo’s debut full-length is to know—on a very deep and almost uncomfortably familiar level—exactly what she was going through when she wrote it at 17. Anchored by the now-ubiquitous breakup ballad ‘drivers license’—an often harrowing, closely studied lead single that already felt like a lock for song-of-the-year honours the second it arrived in January 2021—SOUR combines the personal and universal to often devastating effect, folding diary-like candour and autobiographical detail into performances that recall the millennial pop of Taylor Swift (“favorite crime”) just as readily as the ’90s alt-rock of Elastica (“brutal”) and Alanis Morissette (“good 4 u”). It has the sound and feel of an instant classic, a Jagged Little Pill for Gen Z.
“All the feelings that I was feeling were so intense,” Rodrigo says. “I called the record SOUR because it was this really sour period of my life—I remember being so sad, and so insecure, and so angry. I felt all those things, and they're still very real, but I'm definitely not going through that as acutely as I used to. It’s nice to go back and see what I was feeling, and be like, ‘It all turned out all right. You're okay now.’” A little older and a lot wiser, Rodrigo shares the wisdom she learned channelling all of that into one of the most memorable debut albums in ages.
Let Your Mind Wander
“I took an AP psychology class in high school my junior year, and they said that you're the most creative when you're doing some type of menial task, because half of your brain is occupied with something and the other half is just left to roam. I find that I come up with really good ideas when I'm driving for that same reason. I actually wrote the first verse and some of the chorus of ‘enough for you’ going on a walk around my neighbourhood; I got the idea for ‘good 4 u’ in the shower. I think taking time to be out of the studio and to live your life is as productive—if not more—than just sitting in a room with your guitar trying to write songs. While making SOUR, there was maybe three weeks where I spent like six, seven days a week of 13 hours in the studio. I actually remember feeling so creatively dry, and the songs I was making weren't very good. I think that's a true testament to how productive rest can be. There's only so much you can write about when you're in the studio all day, just listening to your own stuff.”
Trust Your Instincts
“Before I met my collaborator, producer—and co-writer in many instances—Dan Nigro, I would just write songs in my bedroom, completely by myself. So it was a little bit of a learning curve, figuring out how to collaborate with other people and stick up for your ideas and be open to other people's. Sometimes it takes you a little while to gain the confidence to really remember that your gut feelings are super valid and what makes you a special musician. I struggled for a while with writing upbeat songs just because I thought in my head that I should write about happiness or love if I wanted to write a song that people could dance to. And ‘brutal’ is actually one of my favourite songs on SOUR, but it almost didn't make it on the record. Everyone was like, ‘You make it the first [track], people might turn it off as soon as they hear it.’ I think it's a great introduction to the world of SOUR.”
It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
“I wrote this album when I was 17. There's sort of this feeling that goes along with putting out a record when you're that age, like, ‘Oh my god, this is not the best work that I'll ever be able to do. I could do better.’ So it was really important for me to learn that this album is a slice of my life and it doesn't have to be the best work that I'll ever do. Maybe my next record will be better, and maybe I'll grow. It's nice, I think, for listeners to go on that journey with songwriters and watch them refine their songwriting. It doesn't have to be perfect now—it’s the best that I can do when I'm 17 years old, and that's enough and that's cool in its own right.”
Love What You Do
“I learned that I liked making songs a lot more than I like putting out songs, and that love of songwriting stayed the same for me throughout. I learned how to nurture it, instead of the, like, ‘Oh, I want to get a Top 40 hit!’-type thing. Honestly, when ‘drivers license’ came out, I was sort of worried that it was going to be the opposite and I was going to write all of my songs from the perspective of wanting it to chart. But I really just love writing songs, and I think that's a really cool position to be in.”
Find Your People
“I feel like the purpose of ‘yes’ people in your life is to make you feel secure. But whenever I'm around people who think that everything I do is incredible, I feel so insecure for some reason; I think that everything is bad and they're just lying to me the whole time. So it's really awesome to have somebody who I really trust with me in the studio. That's Dan. He’ll tell me, ‘This is an amazing song. Let's do it.’ But I'll also play him a song that I really like and he’ll say, ‘You know what, I don't think this is your best song. I think you can write a better one.’ There's something so empowering and something so cool about that, about surrounding yourself with people who care enough about you to tell you when you can do better. Being a songwriter is sort of strange in that I feel like I've written songs and said things, told people secrets through my songs that I don't even tell some people that I hang out with all the time. It's a sort of really super mega vulnerable thing to do. But then again, it's the people around me who really love me and care for me who gave me the confidence to sort of do that and show who I really am.”
You Really Never Know
“To me, ‘drivers license’ was never one of those songs that I would think: ‘It's a hit song.’ It's just a little slice of my heart, this really sad song. It was really cool for me to see evidence of how authenticity and vulnerability really connect with people. And everyone always says that, but you really never know. So many grown men will come up to me and be like, ‘Yo, I'm happily married with three kids, but that song brought me back to my high school breakup.’ Which is so cool, to be able to affect not only people who are going through the same thing as you, but to bring them back to a time where they were going through the same thing as you are. That's just surreal, a songwriter's dream.”

Album: you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love by Olivia Rodrigo (2026)
Genre: Pop | Mood: Happy
Format: Album

Description: A pop savant raises her game and her standards on her third album.

Olivia Rodrigo has loved and lost many times since she cried through the suburbs as the heartbroken teenager in “drivers license”. She’s grown up, and her standards have gotten higher—for a good love song, but also for what makes a good relationship.

With her third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, Rodrigo is eager to share what she’s learned. “I found a lot of interesting pieces of myself in this album,” she tells Apple Music. “I just wanted to perfect a sad love song. All of my favourite love songs are so beautiful because there’s an element of yearning or melancholy or fear.”

She’s not the first woman to fall in love while waiting in the bathroom line at the bar, as she does in “drop dead”, but you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who can voice that specific, oh-so-familiar scene so vividly.

She sings of hoping to impress a boy’s sister on “u + me = ᐸ3” (“I try to win her over with my cynical humour and yacht rock music taste”); she captures that moment when a love develops from new butterflies into something deeper with “purple” (“I used to visit your town like a tourist/Now I’ve got a local grocery store and a favourite florist”).

It’s not all googly eyes, though: “expectations” taps into the mortification that sets in when the party goggles wear off and a dude goes from cute to cringe real fast (“I think he was on drugs/He wasn’t smart or funny/I convinced myself he was... And now his number’s blocked”), and she invokes the pop-punk snarl of Avril Lavigne and Paramore for “my way”.

And even if she has fun between the ballads, the sadder, sparser songs lay out—again, in characteristically vivid detail—how Rodrigo believes the mistakes we make in the name of love are painful but effective teachers.

“cigarette smoke” delivers one of Rodrigo’s strongest vocal performances, as well as a one-liner you wish you thought of in that final text to an ex (“I thought that we played the perfect couple/Until you didn’t want the part”). “less”, which brings her back to the piano by herself, teaches her that love isn’t all you need to make a relationship work: “If loving me means letting go and wishing me the best/Then I guess I wish, I wish, I wish you loved me less.”

Also effective teachers are the rock stars who came before her: “the cure”, a meditation on the baggage that sinks relationships, boasts a guitar riff that, let’s say, pays homage to “Everlong” as well as Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness-worthy strings, while the longing “what’s wrong with me” goes straight to the source by bringing Robert Smith of The Cure (the band, not the Olivia Rodrigo song) in for a duet.

Maybe you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love is a collection of love notes, but not the kind you send: This is further proof of Rodrigo’s great capacity for feeling, and feeling it all—the brutal lows, sure, but also the bottomless hope that sparks with a look from a stranger in a crowded bar that could potentially change your life.

GUTS (spilled)" presents a raw grunge aesthetic, characterized by its gritty guitar riffs and dynamic percussion that drive the energy of tracks like "all-american bitch" and "get him back!" The production embraces a lo-fi quality, allowing for a sense of intimacy amidst the distortion. The album oscillates between upbeat anthems and reflective ballads, with tracks like "vampire" and "the grudge" showcasing a blend of melancholic melodies and punchy rhythms. Textures range from layered vocal harmonies to sparse instrumentation, creating a contrast that enhances emotional depth. The overall sound is distinctive for its blend of youthful exuberance and introspective lyricism, capturing the complexities of modern adolescence.
