Album: Shadows And Reflections by Marc Almond (2017)
Genre: New Wave | Style: Rock/Pop | Mood: Excitable
Record Label: Strike Force Entertainment
Format: Album

Description: Leave it to Marc Almond to bridge the gap between covers and concept albums. Shadows and Reflections is both. Its track list reveals iconic '60s-era pop songs of astonishing variety. There's Burt Bacharach's "Blue on Blue" and Johnny Mandel's "The Shadow of Your Smile," as well as the Herd's "From the Underworld," a gorgeous, daring read of the Yardbirds' "Still I'm Sad," and Bobby Darin's "Not for Me," to mention a few. Almond and his chief collaborator, British composer, arranger, and saxophonist John Harle (who wrote the set's "Overture" and "Interlude," and co-wrote the closer "No One to Say Good Night To" with the singer), used a guiding aural aesthetic in opting for expansive panoramic sound; they sought to emulate "a very late 1960s Italian cinema soundtrack...." Conceptually, the album begins and ends in a luxury apartment; its protagonist surrounded by objects of art and beauty but emotionally empty. He's alone throughout. As the lyric in the closing track states: "...I'm rich in the bank but the poorest person you know."

Musically, this deep dive into '60s-era mood music, with its lush strings, lilting and twanging guitars, muted brass, and imaginative percussion, sounds timeless. Almond imbues these songs without a trace of nostalgia or irony. The orchestrations are complex and imaginative, and reinforce the notion of isolation, loneliness, and the desire for intimate connection. After the relatively restrained "Overture," the listener is jolted for a moment by the jaunty yet somehow forlorn use of harpsichord in the reading of the Action's title track. Almond sticks close to its melody, but puts his indelible handprint on it through his phrasing, which both illuminates and deepens the lyrics. The reading of Julie Driscoll's "I Know You Love Me Not" possesses the aching drama Dusty Springfield's mid-'60s material did, as well as evoking Driscoll's sense of indictment -- Duane Eddy-esque guitars and all. The set's first single is a reading of the Young Rascals' "How Can I Be Sure." This version, like the original, is innocent, but this blue-eyed soul can't help but make its question existential. It's followed by Timi Yuro's "Something Bad on My Mind," where its teen pleading is replaced by a heartbreak and disbelief so profound it breaks free of the boundaries in its lyrics. The Baroque string charts in "From the Underworld" are bridged to electric guitars and drums by no more -- and certainly no less -- than the passion and pathos in Almond's singing -- as if he knew what its writer (Peter Frampton) was predicting all along. Finally, his versions of the Mandel and Darin tunes smoke, smolder, and burn, earning their place in the hierarchy of interpretations. At the age 60, Almond delivers Shadows and Reflections with absolute commitment. On its surface, it is an exotic encounter with the sound of another era, but this is not merely an homage, but a work of tremendous musical vision and emotional depth.

"Stories of Johnny" envelops listeners in a lush, theatrical soundscape characterized by its rich orchestration and dramatic production. The album blends synth-pop with baroque elements, featuring sweeping strings, vibrant brass, and intricate piano lines that create a cinematic atmosphere. The tempos vary from hauntingly slow ballads to more upbeat tracks, maintaining a consistent emotional intensity throughout. Almond's emotive vocals soar over layered harmonies, while the production employs a glossy finish that enhances the overall grandeur. Distinctive textures emerge from the juxtaposition of electronic beats and organic instrumentation, crafting a unique sonic tapestry that captures both vulnerability and flamboyance, making it a standout in the mid-80s music landscape.

Album: Chaos and a Dancing Star by Marc Almond (2020)
Genre: New Wave | Style: Britpop | Mood: Excitable
Record Label: Strike Force Entertainment
Format: Album

Description: In his personal lexicon, pop chameleon Marc Almond seems to place special meaning on the word "star"; Chaos and a Dancing Star marks the fourth time he's employed it in an album title (alongside 1988's The Stars We Are, 1996's Fantastic Star, and 2007's Stardom Road). The thread that binds these outings to one another and Chaos and a Dancing Star is that all illuminate Almond's expansive view of pop and were deliberately aimed at the charts.

Album: The Stars We Are by Marc Almond (1988)
Genre: New Wave | Style: Rock/Pop | Mood: Excitable
Record Label: Strike Force Entertainment
Format: Album

Description: Another year and another label for Marc Almond, along with a newly stripped-down band, La Magia, with Willing Sinner vets Annie Hogan, Billy McGee, and Steve Humphreys on drums. Even more so than Stories of Johnny, this is Almond with an eye and ear on making a commercial record while still being himself, and the result is much better than expected. Bob Kraushaar's production feels much lighter and brighter in general than Mike Hedges' past efforts, and the songwriting often matches it -- the sprightly opening title track, followed by the tenderly passionate "These My Dreams Are Yours," makes for what has to be the most upbeat start to a Almond album yet. Similar moments crop up throughout the record, including "Bitter Sweet," with a killer sweeping chorus, the sparkling, slightly jazzy "The Very Last Pearl," which gives pulsing nightlife one of its best makeovers ever, and a triumphant, everything-and-the-kitchen-sink version of Gene Pitney's "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart," replaced on later versions of the album with the U.K.-chart-topping duet with Pitney himself. That said, it's still an Almond album through and through -- the lighter songs still have his sweet purr in the vocals (and Hogan's keyboards and instrumental arrangements remain uniformly excellent), while moodier and expectedly dramatic numbers still turn up in abundance. The forceful duet with Nico, "Your Kisses Burn," calls to mind prime Lee and Nancy, with masses of strings to boot; elsewhere, "The Sensualist" acts as his clearest statement yet on the many erotic joys life has to offer. Perhaps most surprisingly of all, "Tears Run Rings," his most overtly political number to date, became a minor U.S. hit.

Description: Trials Of Eyeliner sees three distinct themes – History showcases Marc’s favourites, album tracks and B-sides over four cds recounting Soft Cell’s The Girl With The Patent Leather Face (a track which is simply stunning in its naiveté and roughness), Sex Dwarf and Meet Murder My Angel as well as one of his finest moments Catch A Fallen Star (Marc And The Mambas). It also introduces us to Jacques Brel, the Belgian writer and actor considered to be the master of modern chanson with The Devil (Okay), a writer who along with Scott Walker was a major influence.
