For a record that loosely tackles themes of mind control, I’m In Your Mind Fuzz is a gloriously off-kilter romp that may at times bend the minds of its listeners. A densely constructed race through garage rock, ’60s psychedelia, blues, krautrock and whatever other genre the Australian band happen to find interesting for a few seconds, the “mind fuzz” in the title is a reference to those who preach reptilian and alien conspiracy theories and believe fluoride in the water is a government-enforced mind-control tool. Such flights of fantasy are supported by equally fantastic musical escapades, with the opening four tracks segueing into one another to form a 12-minute suite that thunders along with krautrock-inspired motorik propulsion, wailing effects-laden harmonica and hypnotic guitar freak-outs.

Recorded partly in Brooklyn’s famed Daptone Studios, during its final three tracks the album’s breakneck pace is replaced by a more languid—yet no less experimental—approach, with closing track “Her and I (Slow Jam 2)” channelling The Doors’ “Riders on the Storm” as vocalist Stu Mackenzie exposes his romantic side: “I’ll fill her heart with a lot of love/So the sun can shine a little brighter”.

“Eclectic” is a redundant term when it comes to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Having released 14 studio albums in eight years—including five in 2017!—the Melbourne-based band have widely explored psychedelic rock, electric folk, jazz experimentation and ’70s soundscapes. But on Infest the Rats’ Nest they pivot once more, returning to their heavy metal roots in a celebration of enduring adolescent influences. They pay heed to ’80s thrash metal like Slayer with the pummeling drums and clipped guitar riff of “Organ Farmer”, as well as ’70s-era Sabbath-influenced metal on tracks like “Mars for the Rich” and “Superbug”. The songs are tightly formed and often brief compared to the band’s back catalogue, with the album driven by a core trio: vocalist and guitarist Stu Mackenzie, bassist Joey Walker and drummer Michael Cavanagh. What hasn’t changed is the ecological concerns of Mackenzie’s lyrics, which embrace dystopian scenarios as the wealthy abscond to Mars and pandemics strike the Earth. If that suggests the end days, for King Gizzard it’s also a new direction.

"Nonagon Infinity" is a relentless sonic journey that seamlessly blends garage rock, psychedelia, and progressive elements. The album's production is crisp and dynamic, allowing each instrument to shine through a kaleidoscope of textures. Gritty guitar riffs intertwine with frenetic drumming, creating a driving energy that propels the listener forward. The tempo remains consistently fast, enhancing the sense of urgency and excitement throughout. Layered harmonies and swirling synths add depth, while the use of looping motifs gives the album a unique, cyclical structure that feels both cohesive and expansive. Heady head-bangers that flow together, from start-to-finish, on an infinite loop. The seven-piece Australian rock outfit is known for making concept albums, so it’s no surprise that the ambitious Nonagon Infinity adds a layer of structural symbolism to the mix. Fans will have a field day debating the meaning behind a never-ending LP: Is it a metaphor for constant touring? A nod to psychedelic rabbit holes? It’s hard to say for sure, but fun to find out. With melodic, surf-rock jams like “Big Fig Wasp” morphing into industrious, raucous numbers like “Gamma Knife”, the band has assembled an exhilarating musical obstacle course. Those with serious endurance can keep listening, again, and again, and again.

Do these guys ever sleep? Mortal bands wish they could match King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s work ethic. Polygondwanaland marks the Aussie freak-rockers’ fourth album release of 2017. Where previous LPs swirled jazz, metal and even microtonal tunings into their psych-rock mix, here, the band builds grooves upon grooves—credit goes to two drummers. More bands should adopt this approach. The guitar is the primary navigational tool here, dipping and diving, while stray sounds like harmonica, flute, and odd synth tones add to the scenic vistas. The 11-minute opener, “Crumbling Castle”, with its solid chops and vintage trapdoors, simulates what the side stages at a druid music festival might sound like.

A band doesn’t reach the 26-album mark without its members feeling incredibly comfortable with each other. So it makes sense that Melbourne psych ensemble King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard set aside their usual album-corralling concepts this time to just capture six mates playing together in a room. More than that, leader Stu Mackenzie encouraged a pass-the-mic approach that sees every band member sing, including the vocal debut of drummer Michael Cavanagh on “Le Risque”. Fun little improvisations make the round-robin vibe feel all the more spontaneous—check out the scat section at the end of “Rats in the Sky”—as does each song launching into the next with no space in between. 

Musically, this material is more jaunty than heavy: Even when “Hog Calling Contest” shows off the band’s signature hairpin shifts, it’s in the service of a rustic romp. Equally rootsy is opener “Mirage City”, whose communal harmonies and twang evoke The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers alike. Yet, darker themes lurk behind the band’s sunny exterior, as that first track finds solidarity in escapism via lyrics about parents fighting at home and being desperate to “leave this nightmare behind”. The closing “Daily Blues” similarly offsets its harmonica-licked roadhouse flair with the ominous refrain “Gettin’ fucked up daily”. Just because King Gizz are doubling down on camaraderie doesn’t mean they can’t air their troubles for each other. In fact, isn’t that the essence of friendship?

The second of five planned albums for 2017, the Australians’ 10th studio album is one wild dystopian ride. It’s a three-chapter trip described by frontman Stu Mackenzie as “a visual, descriptive, bleak record” and aided by coolly detached narration from a cyborg named “Han-Tyumi” (an anagram for “Humanity”). The portentous themes aren’t necessarily matched by the music, however. The septet lay on way too much psychedelic metal fun for the mood to turn too bleak.

On their 14th album, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard embrace a new change of pace. After a hectic 2017—where they released a total of five albums—the Melbourne seven-piece pumped the brakes a little in 2018, allowing the band to formulate a new, different approach to the album that would become Fishing for Fishies. The result is a significant shift away from the dynamic, psychedelic jams they’ve become known for, with the focus being on diverse yet rhythmically structured, contained songs. 
Previous concept albums from the group have focused on musical ideas and fantastical themes—all songs on Quarters were of equal length, and Nonagon Infinity can be played on an infinite loop. On Fishing for Fishies, they turn their focus to the environment, singing about plastic pollution and the overuse of technology. The striding “The Bird Song”, which is bright and mellow—a side they hadn’t shown since 2015’s trippy, folk-driven Paper Mâché Dream Balloon—is a reflection on the relational nature between humans and animals over jazzy piano pop. That said, it’s clear that King Gizzard have one thing on their mind: having a boogie. In fact, they think dancing is so nice they named it such, thrice: “Boogieman Sam”, “Plastic Boogie” and “Cyboogie” are groovy romps through hard rock, barroom hijinks and proggy space rock, respectively.

Arriving on the heels of two albums’ worth of the gentle, gauzy psych-pop to which the Melbourne crew would often return, 2013’s Float Along – Fill Your Lungs was where King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard truly became one of the globe’s great purveyors of wild astral jams and face-melting freakouts. The addition of second drummer Eric Moore—previously deployed as keyboardist—is one big reason for the explosive power of the album’s 16-minute opener, “Head On/Pill”, and shorter bursts like “God Is Calling Me Back Home”. Yet the incorporation of new textures and colours (and plenty more sitar) demonstrates just how rapidly Stu Mackenzie’s vision for his group was expanding. This is the sound of a band setting the controls for the heart of the sun before hurtling off the launchpad.

That became the album's 13-minute opening track "Change", which was described as a "odyssey touching on kaleidoscopic '60s pop, color-splattered prog-rock fireworks, and floaty, keyboard-driven retro R&B". Mackenzie described the following songs as building out of the first track: "Hate Dancin" is built out of one of the chord progressions from "Change". And then "Astroturf" is built out of one of the chord progressions in "Change" as well. And so is "Short Change", the last song. Every song on the album is built out of a section of "Change."[
