Brimming with astrological fervour and unbridled emotionality, Red Moon in Venus finds the Colombian American sensation zeroing in on love. From the proud promises behind “Endlessly” to the sweet little profundities of “Love Between...”, the album plays with genre without losing cohesion or connection. On the guest front, Don Toliver matches her R&B potency amid the polyrhythmic blur of “Fantasy”, while Omar Apollo brings his own certain charm to the sumptuous duet “Worth the Wait”. Yet most of the album keeps the spotlight rightfully on her, leading to breathtaking moments like “I Wish You Roses” and the Sade-esque “Blue”. And while Red Moon in Venus returns the artist to a primarily English-language mode, she hasn’t dispatched entirely with the approach taken on 2020’s Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) ∞. She brings bilingual lyricism alongside orchestral accents for “Como Te Quiero Yo” and retro grooves for “Hasta Cuando”.

Whether singing in Spanish or in English, Kali Uchis continually proves herself to be a versatile performer. Following 2020’s Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) and its hit single “telepatía”, the Colombian American singer eventually boasted that she had two more albums, one in each language, more or less at the ready, the first being 2023’s soulful Red Moon in Venus and the next being ORQUÍDEAS. With lyrics primarily (though not exclusively) in Spanish, she delivers an exquisite pop-wise R&B set here, one replete with clubby highs and balladic depth.

The dance floor is well served with cuts like “Me Pongo Loca” and “Pensamientos Intrusivos”, her ethereal vocals elevating them further. The collaborations reflect her journey as well as her status, as she links with superstar KAROL G on the polished perreo throwback “Labios Mordidos” and música mexicana sensation Peso Pluma for the romantic duet “Igual Que Un Ángel”. On “Muñekita”, she bridges her two worlds with the aid of Dominican dynamo El Alfa and City Girls rapper JT, who combine to produce an irresistible dembow moment.

After a burst of impeccable singles and collaborations, Colombian-American singer Kali Uchis delivers her highly anticipated first full-length. A romantic collage of artists and sounds she’s encountered along the way—Tyler, The Creator and Bootsy Collins on “After the Storm”, and Gorillaz’ Damon Albarn on the surfy “In My Dreams”—the album draws on Latin pop (“Nuestro Planeta”), hypnotic R&B (“Just a Stranger”) and high-flying psych-rock (“Tomorrow”, with production from Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker). It’s a sign of Uchis’ artistic vision that she pulled so many creative minds into a single body of work that sounds so distinctly her own.

Album: Sincerely, by Kali Uchis (2025)
Genre: R&B
Format: Album

Description: “I’ve been realising that I really made the album that I needed to heal myself,” Kali Uchis tells Apple Music about Sincerely, perhaps her most liberating work yet. The Colombian American singer-songwriter’s catalogue has never felt slight or frivolous, whether in English or in Spanish. Yet this full-length follow-up to her 2024 ORQUÍDEAS dyad presents as something truly unique, arriving roughly a decade after her promising EP debut Por Vida.

The majority of the songs here began simply as voice notes, fortuitously captured in inspired moments outside of the confines or pressures of a studio setting. “Messages would just feel like they were directly coming through me, and I just had to get them out,” she says. Given such natural creative origins, it should come as little surprise that the actual process behind the album eschewed industry norms altogether, favouring home recording and unconventional settings. And despite the demonstrated level of guest vocal talent at her fingertips, she opted out of features, too. “When you’re making emotional music, you have to actually dig into difficult subjects,” she says, marking a clear distinction between this piece and its star-powered predecessor.

As a result, Sincerely, feels disarmingly intimate for what is ostensibly a pop album, even one from as consistently adventurous an artist as Uchis. The evocative moments of opener “Heaven Is a Home…” and closer “ILYSMIH” speak on love in grand and sweeping gestures, the passing of her mother and the birth of her son making understandably profound impacts on the work.

Influences like Cocteau Twins and Fiona Apple can be felt in all that comes between those bookends. “There’s a lot of grief, but there’s a lot of joy,” she says, describing what seeps through the veil of “Silk Lingerie,” or the vamps of “Territorial”. Excess punctuation on titles like “Lose My Cool,” and “For: You” hint at the flowing prose of her lyrics as it contributes to an even greater whole. “I think it is a celebration of life in its own way,” she says, “in the sense of finding beauty in the pain and taking the good.”
