Album: Westside Whimsy by Jhené Aiko (2026)
Genre: R&B/Soul
Format: Album

Description: “You guys, so much has happened in the last six years,” Jhené Aiko wrote on social media when she announced her first full-length since 2020’s Chilombo. An hour-long journey around the R&B singer-songwriter’s Southern California homeland—complete with guest appearances by locals like Kendrick Lamar and Ab-Soul—Westside Whimsy is full of luxuriant textures that update quiet storm for the bedroom-pop generation.

At times, those plush synths serve as a landing spot for anxieties: “I can’t escape the heartbreak,” she muses over fuzz-covered pianos and strings on “Break”, while “Don’t Be That Guy” pairs a striding beat with Aiko gently, kindly affirming her boundaries.

Aiko lets the sunshine in on cuts like “Beach Boy”, a gently swaying love song where her voice curls around her wonder at the “good vibrations” she’s feeling, and “So Good”, where she and Lamar steal admiring glances at each other over synths.

Related Artists: Summer Walker, TWENTY88, Tink, H.E.R.

Music Scene: Part of the Los Angeles, CA, USA music scene. Emerged in the 2000s era. Associated with R&B movement. Known for Urban/R&B style.

Album: Souled Out by Jhené Aiko (2014)
Genre: R&B | Style: Urban/R&B
Record Label: Def Jam Recordings
Format: Album

Description: After a brief glimmer of R&B stardom in the early 2000s, Jhené Aiko stepped away from the music industry. In the dozen or so years following, she went through a birth (of a daughter), a death (of a brother) and a revival (of her artist self). Following her acclaimed 2011 mixtape, Sailing Soul(s), the Los Angeles-born singer alchemised all of these experiences into her mesmerising 2014 debut album, one of the decade’s chillest alt-R&B touchstones.

Like its evocative album cover, Souled Out hovers somewhere between the sea and sky, occupying its own infinite space in ambient waves of synths, whispers of live instrumentation and Aiko’s always cool and calming presence. Producers No ID, Dot Da Genius, Fisticuffs and Key Wane help the singer embody an airy, acid-dipped aesthetic using minimal sounds to expansive effect. Psychedelic guitar and jazzy horns slither seductively through to give this ethereal odyssey some weight.

Aiko’s method of freestyling has a beat-poet mysticism to it, even when her mantras are imbued with bitterness (woozy kiss-offs “Limbo Limbo Limbo” and “Lyin King”). But mostly, she’s open to exploring and exposing her truth. “You gotta keep goin’,” she purrs on “W.A.Y.S.”, one of the album’s more rose-coloured reveries. Halfway through the track, she switches pronouns, turning her chant into “I gotta keep goin’.” Aiko does this often throughout Souled Out—speaking to loved ones and former flames as she speaks to herself.

“Promise I'll be, promise you'll be, promise we'll be alright,” she coos on the dreamy lullaby “Promises”, featuring music by downtempo duo Röyksopp and appearances by her late brother, Miyagi (via a clip he once sent her), and her daughter NAMIKO, who repeats her mother’s comforting words. Later, on the balmy piano groover “Eternal Sunshine”, she reaches something close to enlightenment, declaring, “If I were to die today, there's not a thing I would change, I’ve lived well.”

Sure, there are standout singles on Souled Out, such as the hip-hop sizzler “The Pressure” and “To Love & Die”, a moody confessional featuring Chicago collective Cocaine 80s and a slick sampling of 50 Cent’s “Many Men (Wish Death).” But this LP is meant to be a widescreen experience to sit back and soak in. This Deluxe Edition features two bonus tracks that reflect the sadness and serenity of the album: the heartbreaking “Remember” and the blissed-out “Blue Dream.”

Album: Chilombo by Jhené Aiko (2020)
Genre: R&B/Soul
Record Label: Def Jam Recordings
Format: Album

Description: Jhené Aiko has always exuded an arresting aura of self-possession, especially when vulnerable. Her journey as an artist so closely parallels her soul-searching path that listening to her moody, mystical meditations can almost feel like an invasion of privacy. Her first two albums—2014’s Souled Out and 2017’s Trip—peel back the layers of consciousness via sex, spirituality, and psychedelics. Her 2020 album digs even deeper into the psyche, inspiring her to christen the sprawling set with her last name.

To record Chilombo, Aiko retreated to the lush hills of Hawaii and surrounded herself with crystals, incense, and singing bowls. It was an experiment in self-discovery and the healing powers of sound. Every song starts as a freestyle and features the ancient bowls, which are said to balance chakras and soothe anxiety. Aiko’s longtime producers Fisticuffs and Lejkeys effortlessly weave the transcendental tones through chill beats and keyboards that endlessly float.

The bowls’ metaphysical potency seemed to have worked because, for a project about heartbreak, these songs are impressively zen. Even when she unleashes vitriol on her ex on cathartic confessionals “Triggered (freestyle)” and “None of Your Concern” (the latter featuring frequent collaborator Big Sean), she keeps her composure. Over 20 tracks, Aiko remains so entrenched in her vibe that even her heavyweight guests—which include Nas, Ty Dolla $ign, Miguel and Future—can’t lure her out of her lulling, low-key centre. On the psychedelia-tinged duet “Lightning & Thunder”, with John Legend, she’s a goddess caught in another’s spell. But mostly, she’s in tune with her power as a strong, solitary woman—as on the swaggering “B.S.”, featuring kindred R&B spirit H.E.R., and the silky “Surrender”, in which she playfully purrs, “I’m a boss bitch, how you don’t f*ck with me?”

This Deluxe Version of Chilombo features nine additional tracks that expand on the album’s gossamer grooves, slithery mix of dreaminess and defiance, and big-name collaborators, with Wiz Khalifa, Chris Brown and Snoop Dogg. The collection also includes 11 videos that showcase Aiko’s myriad sides—at peak island bliss (“Magic Hour”), on gritty urban streets (“One Way St.”), and in animated form (“Down Again”).

Album: Sailing Soul(s) by Jhené Aiko (2021)
Genre: R&B | Style: Urban/R&B | Mood: Carefree
Record Label: Def Jam Recordings
Format: Album

Description: Sailing Soul(s) (stylized as .sailing soul(s).) is the debut mixtape by American singer-songwriter Jhené Aiko; it was released on March 16, 2011. Aiko began working on the mixtape after she gave birth to her daughter, Aiko wrote all the mixtape's songs except "July," which was written by Micah Powell. Most songs on the mixtape were produced by Fisticuffs, except “July” and “You vs Them” which were produced by Bei Maejor, “Real Now” which was produced by Roosevelt, “Do Better” which was produced by J. Lbs and “Growing Apart” which was produced by Tae Beast. The mixtape featured several guest vocalists, including Miguel, Drake, Gucci Mane, and Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar as well as others.

Critically the album received positive reviews, with reviewers saying that the mixtape was one of the "freshest", another reviewer said that the mixtape is making "Noise in the R&B spectrum". The concept follows the story of Aiko having a meeting with a label and she was told by people at the label "I love everything but when you come into these meetings you have to sell yourself." After the meeting Jhene came up with the concept "I’m not a slave to anyone; I’m sailing my soul instead of selling it."

To promote the mixtape Aiko was joined by Grammy-nominated R&B singer Miguel on a one off free secret tour on Sunday, July 15. The free tickets were given away at the Key Club box office on July 6 from 11AM-5PM on a first-come, first-served basis while. The concert started 7:00pm and finished as 9:30pm, lasting a duration of two and a half hours. On October 21, 2012 Aiko released a music video for the song "My Mine". Jhene also released a video for the mixtapes second track "Stranger". Datpiff certified the mixtape Platinum with downloads of 300,000 and an additional 81,000 downloads from MixtapeMonkey.com.

Album: Trip by Jhené Aiko (2017)
Genre: R&B/Soul
Record Label: Def Jam Recordings
Format: Album

Description: Along with her faithful producers Dot Da Genius, Fisticuffs, No ID and Key Wane, Aiko invites a diverse group of collaborators to help her navigate this expansive journey of self-discovery. While Trip dives deep into psychedelia, it’s not an exercise in escaping reality but rather an all-consuming look into it.

On the LP’s glistening opener, “LSD”, Aiko slips a “tiny piece of paper” under her tongue and plunges down the rabbit hole. Throughout the album, her trips—the good, bad, sober, and drug-fueled—are laden with emotion, making the ethereal production even more beguiling. On the gentle folk reverie “Jukai” (a reference to Japan’s “Suicide Forest”), Aiko flirts with death. “Made it out alive,” she chants, her voice floating into the ether. Later, on “Nobody”, she’s popping pills and reciting her life’s most meaningful events over a narcotic groove. “I’m here in this hell that I don’t want to live in,” she sings with a listless lilt.

But it’s love that keeps lifting her higher—on tracks like the woozy romance ballad “While We’re Young,” the retro-cosmic club romp “OLLA (Only Lovers Left Alive)”, and the intoxicating bedroom groover “Sativa”, featuring Swae Lee. Her collaborators weave in and out as if guest stars in a lucid dream: Big Sean complements her candid come-ons on “Moments”, John Mayer injects a dose of acid-soaked guitar into “New Balance” and Brandy floats in like an angel on the twinkling lullaby “Ascension”.

As on Souled Out, Aiko’s inward explorations are still most inextricably linked with family. Her daughter, Namiko Love, returns to the mic for the sweet duet “Sing to Me”. Meanwhile, her father, Karamo Chilombo (a.k.a. Dr. Chill), slides in like a venerable sage on the album’s trippiest tracks, the jazz-infused doozies “Oblivion (Creation”) and “Psilocybin (Love In Full Effect)”. On the latter, he shares the epiphany that comes with many a mystical trip: “We’re all from the universe soul. We’re all one.”

The album features lush instrumentation, combining soft synths and gentle percussion that create a laid-back yet engaging atmosphere. Tracks like "No L.O.V.E." and "Happy" showcase a mid-tempo energy, while the use of airy harmonies and subtle basslines adds depth to the sonic texture. The production balances contemporary pop sensibilities with classic R&B elements, resulting in a sound that is both accessible and intimate. Each song flows seamlessly into the next, making the album a cohesive exploration of love and relationships, marked by its dreamy and reflective quality.
