Album: Jeremy Pelt The Artist by Jeremy Pelt (2019)
Genre: Jazz
Format: Album

Description: The centrepiece of this collection is an absorbing five-part suite inspired by Rodin’s sculptures. It finds New York trumpeter Jeremy Pelt in a sonically expansive mood, supplementing a core sextet with the adroit guitar of Alex Wintz and the prismatic Rhodes and effects of Frank LoCrasto. The four non-suite tracks, more steeped in acoustic jazz, bristle with the same energy and harmonic seeking. The new presence here is vibraphonist Chien Chien Lu, who makes an outsize contribution both as a captivating improviser and as a colourful and attentive ensemble player (on marimba as well, particularly effective in doubling the basslines of Vicente Archer). She lends Pelt’s music a certain Bobby Hutcherson-like flavor, shimmering and thoroughly modern. Pianist Victor Gould swings and stretches out with authority; drummer Allan Mednard and percussionist Ismel Wignall give a three-dimensional quality to every groove. And Pelt achieves some of his most commanding and lyrical trumpet playing on record.

Album: GRIOT: THIS IS IMPORTANT! by Jeremy Pelt (2021)
Genre: Jazz
Format: Album

Description: Griot: This Is Important! is part jazz album, part oral history project, with spoken interludes from fellow artists that trumpeter Jeremy Pelt has made a point of interviewing in recent years. Most are esteemed older figures (bassist Paul West, the late piano masters Larry Willis and Harold Mabern, pianist Bertha Hope, vocalist René Marie, percussionist Warren Smith). The others are peers or even bandmates, as in the case of big-gun tenor saxophonist J.D. Allen and fellow trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. Over instrumental backing, Pelt briefly explains his intent on the leadoff track—not just to honour his forebears, but also to shed light on the meaning of the music and the motivations of those who devote their lives to it.
Each song takes its title from a particularly arresting phrase or idea in the preceding interview snippet. The core lineup is a quintet, with vibraphonist Chien Chien Lu assuming a central melodic role next to Pelt on trumpet. Pianist Victor Gould adds ample harmonic colour—even more so with Brandee Younger joining on harp for “A Beautiful (F*cking) Lie”. Bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Allan Mednard drive the rhythm, aided by the impeccable touches of percussionist Ismel Wignall on four tracks. Pelt’s compositions are characteristically lyrical and flowing, bracingly modern, his trumpet work a model of clarity and invention whether open or muted. “Don’t Dog the Source”, with no piano, captures a particularly live feel as Pelt, Lu and Mednard stretch out. Archer is on the case with a precise bass-trumpet unison on the closing melody, a fresh and unexpected detail.

Album: The Art of Intimacy, Vol. 1 by Jeremy Pelt (2020)
Genre: Jazz
Format: Album

Description: Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt is known for making hard-hitting original music with inordinately gifted peers, but The Art of Intimacy, Vol. 1 finds him in a pared-down trio setting, playing mainly ballad standards with two older master musicians: pianist George Cables (mid-seventies) and bassist Peter Washington (mid-fifties). Pelt, nearing his mid-forties at this point, has matured into the kind of player who can pull this off: a restrained, intimate setting without drums, reminiscent of nights at the celebrated Lower Manhattan club Bradley’s back in the day. Cables was among the elite piano greats who performed there, and his playing here is undimmed, big in sound and effortless in swing.
After Pelt’s own “Love Is Simple” leads off, the trio take up standard repertoire and do it just right on “Little Girl Blue”, “Then I’ll Be Tired of You” and “Always on My Mind” (the one by Green and Newell, not to be confused with Willie Nelson’s hit). “While You Are Gone”, by the unheralded bop tenorist Lucky Thompson, is an unexpected ballad gem. And then there are the duos: Cables’ “Ebony Moonbeams”, a trumpet-piano foray with elegant modern harmony and a stealthy odd-meter pulse; “Ab-o-lutely”, a trumpet-bass blues throwdown in B-flat, as casual and spontaneous as it is intense; and finally “I’ll Never Stop Loving You” by Brodszky & Cahn, which brings The Art of Intimacy, Vol. 1 to a moving, ruminative close.

Album: Soundtrack by Jeremy Pelt (2022)
Genre: Jazz
Format: Album

Description: Jeremy Pelt is not only one of the most fiery and lyrical trumpeters on the jazz scene but also one of its most engaging bandleaders. He has documented several strong units over the years, not least of all the one heard on Soundtrack, his third outing with vibraphonist Chien Chien Lu, pianist Victor Gould, bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Allan Mednard. Flautist Anne Drummond adds sublime textural and improvisational layers to Pelt’s minisuite “The Lighter Side” and “The Darker Side”, and Brittany Anjou plays outside-the-box keyboards (Mellotron, Moog Sub 37) on “The Darker Side” and “I’m Still Standing” (not the Elton John hit). Pelt has a soaring harmonic imagination and moves seamlessly between acoustic and electric palettes, even fading them in and out within the same piece, as occurs on the opening “Picking Up the Pieces” and again on the two-part suite. It’s a deft and genuinely surprising compositional device rather than a glib stylistic posture, enabled by the masterful doubling of Gould on Rhodes and Archer on electric bass.
