Handsome Furs take their raw and roily cerebral rock to arena-sized heights with their second release. Dan Boeckner's blistering guitar work sears the edges of Alexei Perry's icy synth lines on electro-power-pop clap-along "I'm Confused" and heartland rocker "All We Want, Baby, Is Everything". Perry gives "Passport Kontrol" and "White City" a dubby, atmospheric pop edge, and they find their peak on "Evangeline", a growling, sludgy track that combines Nick Cave's haunting intensity with Arcade Fire's thrilling drama.

For their third album, the indie duo switch to full-on high-octane electro-pop, thrusting you straight into a dark, surreal '80s disco. Throughout Sound Kapital, fidgety, fuzzed-out beats get tightly wound around glowing synths that whoosh and squeal with terror and delight. The album throbs incessantly, in the industrial buzz of "When I Get Back" and the prickly New Wave groove of "Memories of the Future". Dan Boeckner's Springsteen-esque wails add a triumphant rush to it all, especially on the euphoric dance-punk anthem "Repatriated".

"Plague Park" envelops listeners in a gritty yet melodic soundscape, characterized by its lo-fi production and raw energy. The album combines driving rock rhythms with synth-pop elements, creating a dynamic interplay between guitar riffs and electronic textures. Tracks like "Hearts of Iron" and "Handsome Furs Hate This City" showcase a pulsating tempo, while the atmospheric layers in "Snakes on the Ladder" and "In the Radio's Hot Sun" evoke a sense of urgency and introspection. The instrumentation is both sparse and impactful, with a blend of distorted guitars, steady drum patterns, and haunting vocal delivery. This distinctive mix of urgency and melancholy defines the album's unique sonic identity.
