Description: Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac is the first full-length studio album by American noise rock band Butthole Surfers, released in December 1984 by Touch and Go Records and Fundamental Records. All songs were written and produced by the Butthole Surfers. This was the Surfers' first album on Touch and Go, and was originally released on clear vinyl. It was reissued on Latino Buggerveil in 1999. The album's back cover and label photos were produced by artist Michael Macioce.
The band embarked on a decidedly more psychedelic direction with their first LP. However, while the album's first half, and in particular "Cherub," have definite psychedelic qualities, elements of traditional punk ("Butthole Surfer"), blues ("Lady Sniff"), surf rock ("Mexican Caravan"), and country rock ("Gary Floyd") are also on display. Dum Dum is also notable for being another song in the Butthole Surfers' catalogue to be based around parts of a Black Sabbath song whilst the lyrics revolve around an entirely different concept from the original. The drums are lifted in this instance, from Children of the Grave, from the Master of Reality album. Many of Psychic...'s tracks were enhanced with extensive tape editing and, in some cases, the addition of non-traditional instrumentation, including the barrage of bizarre sounds (spitting, vomiting, Spanish radio station, etc.) heard in "Lady Sniff." Lead vocalist Gibby Haynes debuted a new vocal technique by singing through a bullhorn for some songs, and played saxophone on "Negro Observer" and "Cowboy Bob." This was the first Surfers studio album to feature double drummers King Coffey and Teresa Nervosa, and the last with bass player Bill Jolly, who had also performed on the band's first two releases.
Approximately half the songs on this album, including "Negro Observer," "Lady Sniff," "Cherub," "Mexican Caravan," "Cowboy Bob," and "Gary Floyd," are staples of the Surfers' live shows.

The album was also released in a "clean" version with profanities removed and with an alternate album cover.
The song "The Lord Is a Monkey" was featured in two 1996 films, Beavis and Butt-head Do America and Black Sheep.

The album was intended to be the follow-up to the Butthole Surfers’ 1996 album Electriclarryland—which spawned the alt-rap earworm “Pepper”—but even that fluke hit didn’t buy the Texan provocateurs creative carte blanche with their Capitol Records bosses.

After the album got held up in label limbo, the band gave the majority of the tracks a production spit-shine and released them in 2001 as Weird Revolution, into a post-nu-metal alterna-culture that had turned less receptive to the Buttholes’ brand of acid-spiked absurdity.

But hearing the original artefact decades later, it boggles the mind as to why this was considered unreleasable at the time: What we hear on After the Astronaut is a veteran noise-punk band successfully adapting to the trip-hop and electronic aesthetics that were permeating modern-rock radio in the late ’90s.

Sure, a record that opens with a megaphoned Gibby Haynes delivering a spoken-word rallying cry for a “weird revolution” over a Madchester rhythm may not have been the easiest sell to the masses, and the album is hardly lacking for bizarro beat-driven experiments with names like “Junkie Jenny in Gaytown”.

But if the label was hoping for another “Pepper”, the Buttholes were willing to play ball: It’s not too hard to imagine an alternate universe where shuffle-grooved sing-alongs like “Intelligent Guy” and “Jet Fighter” are lighting up the TRL request line.

The album was originally released on Touch and Go, and was reissued on Latino Buggerveil in 1999.

Hairway to Steven's title is a play on Led Zeppelin's popular song, "Stairway to Heaven." Some of its tracks also make allusions to other famous musicians, such as Julio Iglesias.
