Album: Living Dub, Volume 3 by Burning Spear (1996)
Genre: Reggae
Format: Album

Description: Dub music is an altered form of reggae in which the vocal parts are either entirely of partly removed from the mix, and the bass and drum parts are made prominent. Burning Spear (a.k.a. Winston Rodney), was an early proponent of this technique, starting with GARVEY'S GHOST, a remix version of the critically acclaimed 1975 landmark album MARCUS GARVEY. LIVING DUB, VOLUME THREE is the 1997 remix of 1995's RASTA BUSINESS. As has been the case with the previous volumes of this series, Burning Spear strips away most of the vocals and focuses on the rhythms while coloring the mix with minimal amounts of reverb. An upbeat, joyous mood permeates VOLUME THREE thanks to the liberal use of brassy-sounding horns on "Smart Dub" and a wicked bass line that shoots through "Chanting Home." Elsewhere, Spear's use of minimal chanting by background singers Carol Wilson and Sharon Gordon contributes to the album's lighter vibe, particularly on such numbers as "Burning Dub," "Investigation," and the lover's rock of "Stand." Recorded at Grove Recording Studio, Ocho Rios, St. Ann, Jamaica. The Burning Band: Winston Rodney (vocals, percussion); Lenford Richards (guitar, funde); Lenyal "Shayar" Jarrett (guitar); Mark Wilson (saxophone); James Smith (trumpet); Charles Dickey (trombone); Jay Noel (synthesizer); Paul Beckford (bass); Nelson Miller (drums, percussion, background vocals); Alvin Haughton (percussion).

Album: Living Dub, Volume 2 by Burning Spear (2003)
Genre: Reggae
Format: Album

Description: Living Dub, Vol. 2 was originally released on LP in 1980 as a dub version of Burning Spear's Hail H.I.M. album. But as with Living Dub, Vol. 1, this 1993 CD reissue ought to come with a bit more explanation on its packaging than it has. This is not really a reissue of the original dub album at all, but rather a reconceptualization of it, with entirely new dub mixes by Barry O'Hare taking the place of the original ones by Sylvan Morris. It also adds a dub version of "Bad to Worst" (from Fittest of the Fittest) and a different version of "Civilized Reggae" from that found on the O'Hare version of Living Dub, Vol. 1. (Strangely, no dub version of "Jah See and Know" is included.) Whatever its failings as an accurate reissue, though, as a musical experience this album gets by just fine. On Hail H.I.M. Burning Spear was backed by a band that was, for all intents and purposes, the Wailers, and their trademark dry, solid groove is in full effect throughout the proceedings. And as with Living Dub, Vol. 1, only the most tight-lipped traditionalist would find fault with O'Hare's mixes. Recommended.
