Album: DNK by Aya Nakamura (2023)
Genre: R&B/Soul
Record Label: Rec. 118
Format: Album

Description: On her fourth studio album, Malian French superstar Aya Nakamura exchanges the high-octane vibe of 2020’s AYA for more relaxed, intimate moments. On DNK—her surname, Danioko, sans vowels—the singer-songwriter takes a journey of sonic rediscovery where nothing is off-limits: “I show everything. I tell everything,” she tells Apple Music. “After COVID, I had to find myself again, musically, and here I wanted to show the quiet aspects [of myself] too.” For every bit of vulnerability, like the personal and confessional “J’ai mal”, there’s a display of her signature self-confidence on tracks like “Beleck”, the Tiakola-assisted “Cadeau”, and “Baby”, where she revels in knowing she’s worthy of desire.

Artist Background: None found, add one? Emerged in the classic era.

Music Scene: Emerged in the classic era.

Album: Nakamura by Aya Nakamura (2018)
Genre: R&B/Soul
Format: Album

Description: With its pithy denunciation of a man that has been spreading lies about her, "Djadja"—the first single from Aya Nakamura's sophomore album—is as much a symbol of female empowerment as it is measure of Nakamura's chart-busting success. With its punchy Afrobeats and melodic R&B, NAKAMURA offers additional delights: the tropical "Copines" builds an unlikely rhythmic chorus around her shaming of lecherous men, "Ça fait mal" enlists dubby bass for her story of a break-up and the pacey "Dans ma bulle" flowers into an anthem of independence.

Album: AYA by Aya Nakamura (2020)
Genre: R&B/Soul
Record Label: Rec. 118
Format: Album

Description: Two years after the release of NAKAMURA, which saw her become a major star throughout Europe, Aya Nakamura dropped her highly anticipated third album. Introduced by the summery banger “Jolie nana,” AYA oscillates between pop, R&B, and Afrobeats with very personal tracks. Galvanized by international success, the hooks expert gathers bold-faced names such as British grime sensations Stormzy (“Plus Jamais”) and Ms Banks (“Mon Lossa”).
Still entirely in charge of her career, Nakamura is a self-made superstar who’s rapidly become a role model for her generation (and, as the French edition of Vogue put it when Nakamura graced the cover in 2021, a symbol for a “dynamic and rebellious France”). “I’ve done all of this,” she says, “and if this can lead young girls, or even boys, to think ‘Wow, I’d like to be like her’, I’ll take it.”
