Funk Generation

Trilingual triple threat Anitta boasts a chameleonic quality as an artist, one who can vibe with Cardi B or Peso Pluma just as credibly as she waves the flag for definitively Brazilian sounds. Expanding on the tantalising tease of 2023’s Funk Generation: A Favela Love Story EP, this broader and bigger expression of the homegrown baile funk style benefits from the wide reach of her global platform. From the opening rhythms of “Lose Ya Breath” to the subtle breeziness of closer “Mil Veces”, she proudly and explicitly represents for the genre. Energetic cuts like “Funk Rave” and “Savage Funk” shake the room, while “Aceita” and “Sabana” delightfully push back against any conservative notion of what this music should sound like. To that end, she brings her knowing pop appeal to “Fria” and “Love in Common”, delivering hooks without losing the overall vibrancy of the dance-floor format. None of these tracks crack the three-minute mark, save for the urgent and profane “Double Team” with Brray and Bad Gyal. And yes, that’s Sam Smith’s unmistakable voice dueting alongside her on the scorching “Ahi”.
