Age of the Exhibitionist

There are few musicians better suited to reclaim the title of “exhibitionist” than Rebecca Black, whose 2011 novelty hit “Friday” made her a viral meme at the tender age of 13. Now 29, the pop star and DJ drew inspiration for her second album from the panopticon of contemporary life. If all the world’s a stage, Black suggests on Age of the Exhibitionist, then you might as well give the performance of a lifetime. On the mood board are the campy, sleazy sounds of the era just before smartphones: Infatuation anthem “Hot Wet Delirious” channels Britney, Brandy and bloghouse, while “Anaheim Star” updates Fergie for 2026. As for the audience—tracks like the wubby “Miss Delicious” and trip-hop-flavoured “Pistol” make it clear that while the world may be watching, she’s really only performing with one viewer in mind.
