"What It Means to Be Defeated" showcases a blend of post-hardcore and melodic elements, characterized by dynamic shifts in energy and emotive vocal delivery. The production is polished, allowing for a rich layering of guitars that oscillate between heavy, distorted riffs and atmospheric clean passages. Tracks like "Collision.Survive" and "Incinerate" feature driving tempos and aggressive percussion, while "Hollow Shell" and "The Quiet Disconnect" introduce softer, introspective moments that contrast with the album's heavier sections. The use of ambient textures enhances the emotional weight of the lyrics, creating a haunting backdrop that resonates throughout. This juxtaposition of intensity and vulnerability is what makes the album distinctive within its genre.
