"Present Tense" presents a rich tapestry of late '60s psychedelic pop, characterized by lush arrangements and intricate harmonies. The production features a blend of jangly guitars, swirling organ lines, and layered vocal harmonies that create a dreamy atmosphere. Tracks like "My World Fell Down" and "Hotel Indiscreet" showcase a moderate tempo, balancing upbeat energy with introspective lyrics. The use of unconventional song structures and whimsical themes, as heard in "Song to the Magic Frog," adds to the album's distinctive charm. Texturally, the album oscillates between vibrant, melodic passages and more subdued, reflective moments, making it a captivating listen that encapsulates the experimental spirit of its era.
