After establishing themselves as the tallboy-crushing overlords of ramshackle lo-fi indie rock, Guided By Voices revealed grander ambitions on Under the Bushes Under the Stars. In lieu of 60-second psych-pop spurts, poignant and sobering power ballads like “The Official Ironmen Rally Song” and “Don’t Stop Now” take their sweet time to hit their ecstatic peaks. And after cheekily asking “Are you amplified to rock?” on 1994’s basement-bound Bee Thousand, GBV answered in the affirmative with the arena-ready rave-up “Cut-Out Witch”.
