It is a follow-up to her previous album, Mountain Soul, released in 2001. Mountain Soul II features 15 songs including three re-recordings; Loveless' 1991 single "Blue Memories" and album track "Feelings of Love", previously recorded on her 1990 album On Down the Line. "A Handful of Dust" is also a re-recording; previously featured on 1994's "When Fallen Angels Fly."

"Busted" was released as the album's lead-off single in September 2009.
