At the Heart of Winter

Widely recognised as the band’s masterpiece, 1999’s <i>At the Heart of Winter</i> was the first Immortal album on which vocalist/bassist Abbath also played guitar. His electrifying riffs and icy melodies coalesced with vastly improved production to establish the Norwegian power trio as black metal’s reigning kings. At a time when most of their peers were fixating on Satan or the works of Tolkien, Immortal were conjuring the arctic violence of Blashyrkh, their own fictional lyrical realm.
