Her chosen name is apt: the heart of a pirate. Béatrice Martin sings of love like a renegade swashbuckler on her debut LP—if that swashbuckler had a devastatingly innocent voice and played pretty piano ditties. The roots of Martin's brittle coo can be traced back through the history of French chanson, which she updates here with enchanting cheekiness. The whole thing lasts just over 30 minutes, but it takes mere moments for her to sweep us off our feet and into her world of romance and whimsy.
