On their third album, Vancouver’s supergroup led by singer/songwriter A.C. Newman, and featuring Neko Case, continue to create the kind of power pop that effortlessly compresses what’s old into something new again. Soaring songs invite comparisons to great bands of yore: the title tune, “The Bleeding Heart Show” and “Use It” could be the work of Cheap Trick, The Kinks and Big Star, respectively. Deceptively melancholic lyrics underscore harmony-guitar-keyboard popfests like “Sing Me Spanish Techno” and “Star Bodies”, and head-spinner “Jackie, Dressed in Cobras” bursts like The Mamas & The Papas blasting on AM radio.
