"Tense Nervous Headache" showcases a vibrant blend of new wave rock and pop, characterized by its eclectic instrumentation and polished production. The album features a mix of synth-driven melodies and live instrumentation, creating a rich sonic tapestry that balances upbeat tempos with introspective lyrics. Tracks like "Don't Cry" and "I Go Where I Go" highlight a dynamic interplay between rhythmic bass lines and shimmering synths, while "Girl With Combination Skin" introduces a more textured soundscape with layered vocals. The energy fluctuates throughout, with anthemic choruses in songs like "American Boyz" contrasting with the more subdued, reflective moments found in "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted." Overall, the album's distinctive sound lies in its ability to merge catchy hooks with emotional depth, all wrapped in a glossy production style typical of the late '80s.
