"Return to Base" showcases Slade's signature hard rock sound infused with pop sensibilities, characterized by vibrant guitar riffs and anthemic choruses. The production is polished yet retains a raw energy, allowing the driving rhythms to shine through. Tracks like "Wheels Ain't Coming Down" and "I'm a Rocker" feature punchy drumming and layered guitar harmonies, creating a dynamic sonic landscape. The tempo varies, with upbeat tracks like "Hold on Your Hats" contrasting with the more reflective "Sign of the Times." The album's textures are rich, blending electric guitars with subtle keyboard elements, while the sentimental mood is evident in tracks like "My Baby's Got It." Overall, the album captures a lively yet introspective essence, making it distinctive within the hard rock genre of the era.
