"King Animal" presents a gritty sound that embodies the essence of grunge while exploring a more polished production quality. The album features heavy, distorted guitar riffs and dynamic drumming that drive tracks like "Been Away Too Long" and "Non-State Actor," creating a raw yet refined energy. The instrumentation often alternates between brooding, atmospheric sections and explosive choruses, as heard in "By Crooked Steps" and "Blood on the Valley Floor." Textures range from the haunting melodies of "Bones of Birds" to the more aggressive tones in "Worse Dreams." The overall tempo varies, maintaining a sense of urgency while allowing for introspective moments, making "King Animal" a distinctive return to form for the genre.
