After challenging listeners with the stridently askew Wowee Zowee, Pavement opted to play nice on its follow-up, buffing the rough edges of their sound to a crystalline sheen. While the convulsive crunch of “Stereo” gets the album off to a playful start, Brighten the Corners is more a fading-sunset farewell to young adulthood, rife with yearning pleas for domesticity (“Shady Lane”) and power-pop pick-me-ups for ageing hipsters entering the big-box-shopping stage of their lives (“Date With IKEA”).
