Description: Welcome to the Beautiful South is the debut album by The Beautiful South released in August 1989. Three singles were released from the album: "Song for Whoever" (#2 in the UK), "You Keep It All In" (#8) and "I'll Sail This Ship Alone" (#31).
Jan Saudek's album cover originally depicted two pictures, one of a woman with a gun in her mouth, and another with a man smoking. Woolworths refused to stock the album to, in the words of the band, "prevent the hoards of impressionable young fans from blowing their heads off in a gun-gobbling frenzy, or taking up smoking"; therefore, an alternative cover featuring a picture of a stuffed toy rabbit and a teddy bear was made.
NME included in the "Top 100 Albums You've Never Heard" list in 2012.

Artist Background: The Beautiful South was an English pop group formed at the end of the 1980s by two former members of Hull group The Housemartins, Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway. Other members were Sean Welch (bass), Dave Stead (drums) and Dave Rotheray (guitar) and a succession of female vocalists - Briana Corrigan, Jacqui Abbott and Alison Wheeler. The group broke up in January 2007, claiming the split was due to "musical similarities", having sold around 15,000,000 records worldwide. In January 2009, it wa...
