For Thrice, scraping post-hardcore and agonising screamo are just jumping-off points for the band’s dynamic genre explorations. Whirring electronic effects skitter like bugs underneath "Between the End and Where We Lie", while "Atlantic" balances twinkling, lullaby-like percussion with Dustin Kensrue's breathy vocals, and "For Miles" incorporates bursts of studious classical piano before delving into a bruised post-rock turmoil. The frenzied "Hold Fast Hope" even features a subdued, jazz-like interlude in between its tangled metal vortexes.
