Seconds Out by Genesis

Album cover for Seconds Out - Genesis

Seconds Out is a live double album by Genesis, released in October 1977. It reached No.4 in the UK, remaining in the charts for 17 weeks. The performances were recorded in Paris in 1976 and 1977 on their tours in support of A Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering. At the end of several songs the crowd can be heard encouraging the band to play another song by chanting "Une autre!" which literally means "another one".

Two years after Peter Gabriel’s exit, Genesis’ second live album captures Phil Collins as full-fledged frontman. Recorded in Paris in 1976 and ’77, the double-LP balances accessible singles with flights of fancy like “Firth of Fifth” and the 24-minute “Supper’s Ready”. Jazzy drumming (mostly from Chester Thompson) and prominent synths drive the band, but memorable choruses and that soon-to-be-ubiquitous voice forecast their pop future. Despite the common perception of prog rock, Genesis don’t take themselves too seriously—they sound loose and good-natured across this epic set.
